The urbanization trend is well underway

I know that doesn't necessarily hit on the point of the article as folks could move from, say, NYC to downtown Oklahoma City and be supportive of the article's thesis and my tag line.

However, just a few points on where I'm going. Our largest generation has voted with their collective pocketbook. They prefer experiences over stuff. I cannot walk to a single restaurant or coffee shop from my suburban abode (well, without taking 45 minutes to do so). I'm somewhat limited in what I can do on the weekends as I'm mowing grass, spreading mulch, working in the garden, etc. Millennials, by and large, don't want that nonsense. They travel, walk to stuff, eat out, go to shows, and do so largely from their urban abodes.

But here's a trend that bears watching. We had a demographer in about six months ago who noted the kids graduating from college the past few years got to see the financial crisis and the effect it had on their families in a real and personal sense. As a result, this age cohort will take less risk than generations that came before them (think venturing out (or not) and starting one's own business). This group places a high priority on safety and security in employment and living conditions. As such, this group has been moving to places like St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and ________ (I forget the third, but it was very much mid-western, like OKC or Tulsa). It is expected they will work for their employers for long periods of time as opposed to jumping around for another 5% bump in salary. All of that doesn't signal the end of places like DC, NYC or LA, but I found it just an interesting change in the habits and values of 20-somethings.
